Hi Kerrie! I got your email message. Thank you for volunteering to post our completed Venn Diagram. I am going to post my thoughts about two cartoons shortly.
Nicole Kline's thoughts:
Welcome to All:
Joseph Keppler
peaceful and welcoming
Uncle Sam is on the Refuge Ark and is welcoming immigrants that are surrounded by war
claiming no taxes, no kings, everyone is welcome!
Kerrie's thoughts:
welcome to all is only welcoming white european immigrants
Uncle Sam is offering free education, free land, free speech, free ballot, and free lunch
the clouds have "war" written above them and are dark
Where Both Platforms Agree:
J.A. Wales
very violent--nailing Chinese man to an "anti-chinese" plank
showing violence and discrimination
could be encouraging the start of war with China by the mistreatment of a Chinese man
Kerrie's thoughts:
one plank represents the republican party and the other plank represents the democratic party
implying that he votes of chinese immigrants are not valued by either party
symbolic of the american desire to restrict chinese immigration
SIMILARITIES:
1880 is when the images were created
both published in PUCK magazine
Kerrie's addition:
both tell a story about the treament of immigrants
*Nicole, let me know what you think of my additions and if you have anythings else to add!!
I had a really hard time finding information explaining what these cartoons meant. I was finally able to get them to load on LOC website. Many of the other links in the module were not working for me. So I do not have any other resources.
Kerrie:
A great teaching resource I found for teaching about US immigration from 1880-1914 is: http://teacher.scholastic.com/researchtools/researchstarters/immigration
Kerrie--I think it looks great! Are you sure you are okay with compiling it all to the Venn Diagram?
